Why Papua New Guinea?
The Glory of God is Worthy
FinisTerre, named after one of PNG’s mountain ranges, exists in order that God’s glory might be known in this part of the world.
“For all the gods of the peoples are worthless idols, but the Lord made the heavens…Ascribe to the Lord, O families of the peoples, ascribe to the Lord glory and strength! Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name.” (Psalm 96:5-8).
We know that this great God to whom glory is due is none other than Jesus Christ, who instructed His disciples how this was to be done:
“All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
By partnering with local churches, our mission is to plant churches at the ends of the earth in Papua New Guinea, where the need is great, in order that unreached peoples can indeed ascribe to Jesus the glory due His name and worship Him!
The Need is Great
Papua New Guinea is one of the most rugged places on the planet–with its people groups perpetually separated by steep mountains, fast-flowing rivers, volcanos, and other geographic obstacles. This landscape is largely the reason why so many languages have been preserved here. In fact, the linguistic diversity of Papua New Guinea is unparalleled!
Though roughly the size of California and with a population of only 9 million people, this country holds over 12% of all the world’s languages, making it the most diverse country on the planet! Of the 830 languages in the country, more than 300 are not yet written down, making access to Scripture for these people groups nonexistent. The need for missionaries to go to Papua New Guinea is great.
